SHPE-NYC Board Members Give Back to CCNY LAESA-SHPE Chapter


On May 13th, 2011, the CCNY LAESA-SHPE chapter celebrated their 27th Annual End of the Year Gala Banquet. Every year they come together to celebrate another successful year in LAESA-SHPE's history. Attendees included current members, professionals, faculty members, and alumni.

In recapping their awesome accomplishments throughout the year, they also reached to SHPE-NYC to highlight some our contributions to the student chapter.



Leony Rosa (pictured on the left) was the Keynote Speaker for the event. Below are the some special words the CCNY board wanted to share with Leony.

"He holds a Masters in Electrical Engineering and he is the SHPE-NYC Finance VP and also the recipient of the SHPE 2010 Professional Role Model (SHPE Technical Achievement Recognition) STAR award. As an alumni of LAESA-SHPE, he holds a special place in all our hearts, and inspires all of us."






Every year, CCNY also hands out an "Alumni of the Year" award. Congrats to our president Edward Montenegro (pictured on the right) for the award! Below are some special words the board had to describe their alumnus.

"The following individual is a very dear friend to all us here in the Executive Board. He has been with us from the very beginning guiding us every step of the way. There are not enough words to express how we feel about this person; he is a true inspiration and a role model. His wiliness to help and give back makes him an outstanding person in our eyes. We are still amazed at how he accomplishes so much. For all these reason it warms our heart to give the Alumni of the Year Award to Edward “Superman” Montenegro."


Congrats to Leony and Edward for their recognition, and most importantly, congrats to LAESA-SHPE for 27 years of dedicated service to the Hispanic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math students at CCNY!

This position is a direct report to the Vice President IT & Chief Information Officer and a member of the Information Technology Senior Leadership Team. Provides PSEG business units with the technology vision and leadership to assure the timely, innovative and cost-effective use of technology in order to achieve the firm’s desired outcomes, improve business productivity and enable business growth. Develop a strategic technology direction, long-term IT investment strategy, and a business applications/technology architecture aligned with business objectives and strategy to propel the company forward. Establish strong credibility and rapport, and develop relationships with the internal lines of business to promote trust and confidence in the technology leadership team. Establish value-enabling architecture management processes required to meet business objectives. Coordinate technology strategic planning, actively seeking ways to leverage the integration of business processes with applicable emerging technologies in order to improve and streamline operations and services in the most efficient and cost-effective manner.

Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Business, or a related technical discipline
• At least fifteen years experience in the technology field, with solid experience in a senior management role leading a staff at least of ten senior technologists
• At least five years of experience in project management of major development projects
• Significant experience and knowledge in implementing computing architectures and networked computing structures as an employee of a large corporation
• Short- and long-term strategic planning expertise that produced innovative technology solutions for implementation across multiple disciplines
• Creative, strategic thinker/problem solver; ability to exercise independent judgment and creative problem-solving techniques in a highly complex environment using leading-edge technology and/or integrating diverse user systems
• Excellent oral and written communications skills with technical and non-technical clients; demonstrated ability to present and discuss complex technical information in a way that establishes rapport, persuades others, and gains understanding and approval

PSEG 2011 Career Opportunity - Staff Engineer (12232)


This is a multi-level position; the title, grade level, and PIP target assigned to the successful candidate will be determined by assessing skills and related experience, based upon results from the interview process.

Note: Recent college graduates are encouraged to apply.

Work as an engineer in Electric and Gas Asset Strategy within the Asset Management and Centralized Services organization, utilizing a broad knowledge of business
and engineering principles and practices acquired through progressive experience.

The successful candidate could be assigned to one of the following groups based on experience and business needs:

Engineering and Design:
Provide engineering support under the direction of others for electrical capital projects for switching and substations of voltage class from 4 kV to 500 kV from
concept to successful completion in terms of safety, reliability, timely completion and within scope and budget.
Responsibility includes, but not limited to: Develop scoping documents and prepare estimates based on the project schedule. Assist in the development of
economical/reliable station layout and one line control drawings during initial phase of the project; assist in the development of project schedule. Calculate
equipment ratings and provide input in developing specifications for equipment purchase.
Ability to perform electrical calculations for substation grounding, battery sizing, lightning protection, voltage drop, short circuit analysis, Station Light & Power
transformer sizing etc. Job responsibilities include on call 7 days, 24 hours response to system emergencies.
Review and approve licensing packages for obtaining permits and construction drawings to assure all engineering standards, construction standards and safety codes
are met. Review and provide comments and approve control and layout constructions drawings.

System Protection:
Develop protection plan, control one line, perform relay setting calculations, engineering studies, analyses and interpretations. Provide technical assistance to field
personnel and provide technical assistance in implementing special programs and new techniques for existing products/technologies. Prepare specifications and
standards for equipment and its installation. Expand knowledge of relay maintenance and Company operations through development programs and on-the-job
training. Oversee special projects involving technical, field personnel, consultants, and contractors. Perform “trip” analysis to determine correct relay operation during
failures.

System Reliability:
Operate and maintain the ESOC Energy Management System (EMS) infrastructure, the Distribution SCADA infrastructure in a manner that provides accurate system
operating status. Provide effective NERC CIP compliance support, including configuration control and cyber security testing.

Electric Asset Strategy:
T&D Asset Life Cycle strategy and plan, Integration of OP, IP, Transmission overhead and underground lifecycle strategies and substation and transmission
equipment ratings and design to ensure reliability. T&D System reliability analysis, T&D System Health and Risk Management, T&D System Maintenance strategy and
plan. Plans include maintenance policies/strategies, design specifications, operating ratings and standards, replacement strategies and plans, assessment of risk.

Electric Technical Support:
Develop lifecycle plans and maintenance and operating standards for Inside Plant, Outside Plant, Transmission, Sub-transmission and Distribution. Define
maintenance, replacement and refurbishment requirements for each asset type. Work closely with Asset Strategy to endure designs meet intended results. Provide
Technical Support services involving complex Substation and Distribution Overhead and Underground power systems to strategic customers and to all four electric
delivery operating divisions. Support the extensive capital infrastructure replacement program by providing engineering and technical services, equipment technical
specifications, equipment ratings, manufacturing, installation and commissioning standards for new substations. Provide expertise on the operability/condition of
equipment. Conduct equipment failure analysis and define subsequent corrective action.

Transmission Design / Engineering:
Design and cost estimate Electric Transmission Outside Plant. Provide UG Transmission Construction Supervision and Support. Transmission ROW specifications and
control, fault evaluations, circuit ratings, Standards, material recommendations and requisitions, maintenance specifications.

Required:
• B.S in Electrical Engineering or equivalent degree or technical experience
• 0-5 years of electrical utility or plant experience and knowledge of electrical substations and switching stations equipment, e.g., transformers, circuit breakers,
medium voltage switchgear, regulators, capacitor banks, disconnect switches and associated electrical system for switching and substations and or outside plant
electric distribution and/or transmission systems.
• Applicant must have effective problem-solving and decision-making skills, strong planning and organizing skills, must be adaptable and be results-oriented.
• Clear and concise writing and verbal communications skills are essential.
• On call 24/7 hours to handle emergency replacement work and assist during system emergency situation.
• Must have a valid drivers license
• Must foster an inclusive work environment and respects all aspects of diversity
• Must demonstrate and value differences in others' strengths, perspectives, approaches, and personal choices

Desired:
• Advanced technical training or P.E license
• Familiarity with utility best practices, IEEE, ASME, NESC and NEMA Standards.
• Candidate requires knowledge of company or other industry engineering and design standards.
• Experience in working on electrical layout, one line control, controls schematics for protective relays, alarms, auxiliary power, SCADA and metering circuits in order
to effectively support projects.
• Experience with modern protective equipment such as microprocessor relays, substation data concentrators, digital fault recorders, etc.

SHPE-NYC Member earns PMP Certification




Below is an excerpt from SHPE-NYC member Javier De Carlos, who has recently earned his PMP certification. Javier attended the SHPE National sponsored Management Growth Training (MGT) in 2010.


Every time I reach a new accomplishment I like to take a moment to think of the path that enabled me to achieve the goal. SHPE was the main catalyst in my PMP Certification. SHPE is comprised of excellent people and the best career fairs I've ever attended. I am a proud SHPE member since 2009, and have attended many of their high level professional development programs. I was accepted to attend the 2010 Management Growth Training, and  it was the most motivational course I have ever attended.

The PMP is not just a mandatory certification in some job positions, it is also the best way to protect the Project Manager profession. It demonstrates that you have the knowledge and required professional experience. In my case, my university degree and professional experience has been augmented by my PMP Certification, as I continue to navigate my career path.
